In Cartografías del devenir: Ensayos sobre fragmentos y configuraciones, artist Sandra Cáceres Simons (Arequipa, 1977) presents her inquiries into the principles of organization and connection underlying the transformation of matter. Through the agency of organic materials—animal and plant fibers—and artificial elements such as wire, wax, and resin, as well as through the development of Anudado Simbiótico—a textile technique of ancestral [re]configuration that references lichen as a form of biological and structural fusion—the works reveal perceptions of the processes and relationships that shape natural systems and forms of life.
Drawing on the germination, branching, and expansion of organisms, the works—moving between the primary gesture and the complex interconnected whole—[de]code the structures, networks, and nodes of the sensible, the possible, and the essential. Metamorphosis, both as matter and as act, runs throughout the body of work. Pictorial essays register, through line, point, and space, notions of unity, multiplicity, and connection; multiple shoots, like cells, converge to form organic layers; sensory membranes emerge, encapsulated or released.
Through the spinning of time and the channeling of energy, rhizomatic textiles evoke the growth and extension of living forms: fibers shift, accumulate, and mutate; the textile structure gives form, supports, contains, and preserves. In the artist’s terms, these essays constitute a cartography, understood as a record of relationships; becoming, as a continuous phenomenon; the fragment, as a unit of organization; and configuration, as an event of transformation.
In Cartografías del devenir, Sandra Cáceres presents an ecosystem of material metamorphosis and an affective landscape of making, where forms, states, and textures extend the poetics of life through balance and attunement with nature. That is, a cosmos of the one and the whole: in one, all; in all, one. Ultimately, the artist traces a line—at once natural and philosophical—within contemporary textile art in Peru, while advancing an artistic research practice centered on materiality and the possibilities of textile within the visual arts.
